Guest Mix + Interview: Wynde Up
Hello! Today, we have the opportunity to catch up with Wynde Up, a producer from Tehachapi, CA who has been making some game-changing music. Not only has he had an EP released on Ninety9Lives, but he's also been included in Recall Records' Family Values Vol. 2 compilation album and has also released a track on Echoes Collective. Wynde Up's unique and experimental style is sure not to disappoint both on-stage and off, and is definitely not to disappoint with his guest mix for us, which you can listen to here:
Now for our interview. We like to start out all of our interviews by building up some hype. So, what do you have planned in the future? Anything upcoming we should know about?
- I plan to keep on making music, haha! I have an official remix coming out soon that I made for the band Serpents Tongue, but I don't have a release date for that one yet. I have a 3-track EP that is way more vibey than most other stuff I've made that's looking for a home currently, and I may or may not have something coming soon with Echoes Collective as well. ;)
Who is Wynde Up?
- It's me, ya boy. A tall brownie who gets violently nervous before shows. But, I find my spot when I'm up there and I love trying to show people stuff I don't think they've heard before. Maybe I'll show you your new favorite song, who knows!
We saw that you've been playing quite a few shows recently. What songs have you been rinsing out lately? Can include your own or other people's music!
- My current favorite track to play out is Orange by Ivy Lab. I love the sub movement on it and the beat just hits me in the right spots. Woe by Golden Child, Arrogance by Onumi, Out Here by Bishu, and Bumblebee by Donkong are some current favorites right now too.
How long have you been making music?
- I've been making music since around 2008-ish, but it wasn't always electronic stuff.
What kind of music were you making before electronic music?
- I used to be in metal bands. I was a guitarist and wrote a handful of tracks, and I would bring them to practice and flesh out songs with a band I used to be in. I did that for a couple years when I first got into music.
What made you want to start making music?
- When I was younger, I would play video games a lot, as a lot of people did, but I thought Guitar Hero was something else and I loved playing it. It made me want to learn to play actual guitar, so I did. I was in a couple of bands throughout middle school writing tracks here and there, but that all fell apart pretty quickly and we never got anything recorded. I liked writing music and continued to do so with my guitar. I met and starting hanging out with a good friend of mine (shoutout Zac!) who would have on Deadmau5 radio on Pandora. A song called TC - Where's My Money (Caspa Remix) came on. I had never heard anything like it and asked what it was. My friend told me we could make that sort of thing and that he had FL Studio, so we would just mess around making things and I thought it was great. Sometime later I met another friend of mine (shoutout again to Donovan!) who told me he made dubstep and I asked him to show me. He also used FL and I started trying to learn it a little bit more. In 2012, I went to EDC Las Vegas, which was my very first live event I ever attended. I had never been to a concert before it. I was taken by the whole thing and decided that was what I wanted to do. I switched my major in college from astrophysics to commercial music, and here I am now!
Of course, to end it off we always like to ask something casual. What did you eat for breakfast this morning?
- I wasn't even awake for breakfast. The first thing I ate today was a cheesy bean and rice burrito from Taco Bell, if that counts.
